Is Hillary running for 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Conspiracy theories are difficult to advocate.  Whether it's the grassy knoll, the lunar landing or little green men at Roswell, the tendency to rely on Ockham's razor prevails: "All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best".  In order for any of these massive conspiracy theories to actually have happened, the immense amount of people and level of complexity involved is staggering.

However, with both Hillary and Barack still engaged in mortal combat, it leaves one to question why this contest continues and perhaps a sweeping conspiracy does exist or perhaps a simpler answer is available.  In recent days the momentum has shifted even more in favor of Barack Obama obtaining the Democratic nomination for President.

Barack has amassed 1,588 pledged delegates, leads in the popular vote (counting Florida and Michigan), has won at least 29 primaries/caucases and leads in superdelegates with more flowing towards Obama with increasing frequency.  Most recent support includes:

  • Jerry Meek
  • Jeanette Council
  • Inola Henry
  • Dan Gelber
  • Peter DeFazio
  • Jennifer McClellan (switched from Clinton to Obama)
  • Donald Payne (switched from Clinton to Obama)

In addition, several superdelegates are becoming even more vocal in their desire to end the race:

The outcome is very clear for the Democratic nomination. It's effectively Barack Obama's nomination. It's pretty effectively sewed up and I don't see any possibility of altering or changing that inevitable fact - Ted Kennedy

But I think, mathematically, the race is all but won by Barack Obama, and the time has come for all of us to unite and get ready for the general election in the fall - George McGovern

A recent comment by Al Sharpton is as humorous as it is telling:

The worst thing in the world is when an entertainer doesn’t know when the show is over.  The audience is gone, the lights are down, you’re getting ready to cut the mics off and you are still on the stage singing. It’s over, it’s all right, it’s over. Come sing another day, but this show is over, Senator Clinton.

Follow the money

Hillary had to loan herself over $6.4 million over the month of April just to try to keep up while Barack started the month of April with $42 million to spend.  Recently fundraisers have also left the Clinton campaign including Gabriel Guerra-Mondragon formally called the "Hillraiser".  So, with superdelegates slipping away and financing drying up, why does Hillary continue to keep up the fight.  Despite the Rocky analogies, it appears something more duplicitous might be in play.

Yes, I admit that in this situation joining the ranks of the conspiracy theorists seems to be the only thing that makes any sense.  If Hillary continues battling Barack she not only has the opportunity to discredit him and lesson his chances of winning in the Fall, she also continues the derision within the Democratic party further weakening his chances.  But to have a really solid conspiracy theory, we need to involve high ranking officials in the cover up...

Enter Nancy Pelosi

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has recently been quoted as stating "The people should all have the opportunity to speak as long as two candidates wish to compete in those primaries and caucuses."

In layman's terms, as long as Clinton wants to keep running the Democratic party into the ground that is fine, we are looking forward to 2012 anyway.  OK, maybe that's a little over the top but you get the idea.  With so many well respected Democratic party members such as George McGovern asking the party to end the primary race, why does Pelosi support the continued no win effort being pursued by Clinton.  Perhaps even Pelosi is looking forward to a White House run in 2012, ah the plot thickens.

Even Rush Limbaugh has been in on the act with his "Operation Chaos".  Encouraging voters to cross over and vote for Clinton in Indiana to extend the primary.

Hmmm, maybe there really was someone on the grassy knoll and we do have aliens living among us.  At least Leno, Colbert and Stewart will have enough ammunition to fire away long into the night.
