Road Rage is now part of common vernacular PDF Print E-mail

Road RageHow many times has it happened to you, maybe on the same car ride.  The person driving an inch off your bumper only to swerve in front of you and slow down to a crawl.  A car pulls into your lane, cutting you off, without even so much as a glance into their mirrors or a flick of the turn signal arm.  The multi-tasker swerving down the road listening to their cell phone, punching their blackberry and eating his breakfast simultaneously.

What used to be the exception is now the norm and incidences of road rage have become all too common.  An interesting survey was recently commissioned by AutoVantage, a national autoclub.  The "In the Driver's Seat Road Rage Survey" found that the least courteous city in the country is Miami while the most courteous drivers are found in Pittsburg.  See if your city made the list:

Ten Cities with the Least Courteous Drivers
  1. Miami
  2. Boston
  3. New York
  4. Baltimore
  5. Washington, DC
  6. Atlanta
  7. Los Angeles
  8. Phoenix
  9. Dallas (tie with Tampa)
  10. Tampa (tie with Dallas)

Ten Cities with Most Courteous Drivers
  1. Pittsburg
  2. Portland
  3. Seattle
  4. Minneapolis
  5. Cleveland
  6. Cincinnati
  7. Sacramento
  8. Chicago
  9. San Diego
  10. San Francisco

Having driven in the majority of cities in both lists, my personal experience would indicate that all of the cities could vie for "least courteous" at one point or another.  Coincidentally, I happened to be in one of the "most courteous" cities this morning (city will not be names to protect the innocent).  While driving to the meeting in my sporty 2008 Maliblow rental, a Honda Civic begins to appear in my rear view mirror.  The supposedly souped-up Civic quickly gains on me and plants itself on my rear bumper.  Now, perhaps this was intended as some East-meets-West mating ritual, resulting in a Maliblow-Civic hybrid vehicle bent on conquering the world.  Or, more likely, it was a Civic with an inferiority complex.

Now normally I would just move over into a slower lane and let the jerk pass, however in this situation a complication was present.  On this particular stretch of road, the orange barrels had sprouted from the pavement like spring flowers and there was only one lane.  In addition, a long line of cars were in front of me dutifully adhering to the speed limit or perhaps just forced to drive slower due to congestion.  Despite the obvious "there's no where else to go", the Civic continued to ride my bumper inching ever closer.  Fortunately, the construction ended after a couple of miles.  Of course, as a second lane opened up, trucks and cars began jockeying for position making it very difficult to dislodge the Civic.  Eventually, the game of automobile musical chairs ended and the Civic was able to get passed me only to pull directly in front of my car until I finally reached an exit.

Not the most exciting morning commute, however given another driver or perhaps catching me on a different day, this easily could have resulted in a Maliblow-Civic merger as both drivers began racing each other treating the other motorists as simply inconvenient obstacles.  With such aggressive, inconsiderate drivers on the roadways, normally docile drivers can be provoked into action.  Not an excuse for poor driving, merely another explanation.

Getting back to the "In the Driver's Seat Road Rage Survey", several other interesting, however somewhat common sense results were documented.  For example, new trends and road rage triggers for 2008 include drivers talking on cell phones, eating, drinking, texting and e-mailing.

Suppose writing this article on my laptop propped on my dashboard might not be such a good idea after all.  Drive safe everyone...

If you ask me the most courteous cities are listed in reverse. Pittsburg is listed as #1, get serious. Those hills alone are enough to drive you crazy.

Today someone pulled along the left side of me (and there wasn't a turn lane) and turned left as the same time as me. We almost hit and the guy didn't even act as if he had done anything wrong.

I live directly in-between numbers 4 and 5.

Just the other day I saw a man in a Hummer H2 try to make a right-hand turn around a sedan that was already turning right at a stop sign. He was swinging around the stopped car (which committed the heinous crime of actually stopping) to the left using the opposing traffic lane.

The stopped car that was getting cut off laid on their horn, and the hummer honked back, and then something really strange happened. The guy in the hummer stopped and got out as if the person he was being a complete raging asshole to was in the wrong, and needed to be corrected. The two guys stood there facing off for a while, but nothing happened.

I would have cheered for the guy in the sedan if he decided to shoot the Hummer driver, but we've already had two shootings on that block in the last week.

Lovely neighborhood, eh?

I was just in the parking lot at the local target and some jerk is driving on the left side. I brake fast and her car is facing right at me. I wait, assuming she'll go around to the right side of the road and you know what she does? She makes a left turn in front of me, no signal, nothin, gliding through empty spots still going the wrong direction. You know why? Because she was on her freakin cell phone too busy to drive.

Even Miss Congeniality can be guilty of Road Rage! smilies/smiley.gif

Jenna Racine Walters, Miss Fayetteville 2006 and the winner of that year's Miss Congeniality award, pleaded guilty to an aggressive driving charge Thursday.

Witnesses told Southern Pines police that Walters, 21, sped through traffic on U.S. Highway 15/501 on Nov. 9, weaving into oncoming traffic lanes in an attempt to catch up to another young woman with whom she had a confrontation.

Witnesses said Walters slid her car in front of one driven by Angela Thomas before getting out of her car and screaming at Thomas.

Thomas, 22, of West End, called Walters a good person and denied that Walters ever hit or intimidated her.

Police reports say Walters’ vehicle bumped into Thomas’ car, causing $400 in damage.

Walters declined comment during her appearance in Moore County District Court.
