Let's skip to the end PDF Print E-mail

Depending on the type of person you are, skipping to the end of a book is quite normal.  Some studies have suggested, however, that skipping to the end of a book may correlate with "impulse control".  For example, if you offer a child one marshmallow now or two marshmallows if they are willing to wait a short while.  According to research, the child that waits for the two marshmallows will demonstrate greater self-discipline and persistence later in life.

Well, this Democratic primary season has been quite an exercise in patience and persistence.  Now that June has begun and with Democratic convention scheduled for August, who would have predicted that Obama and Clinton would still be attempting to secure the nomination.  Finally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and party chairman Howard Dean are stepping up their efforts to end the uncertainty.

The three of them are banding together to encourage the uncommitted superdelegates to make a decision.  Now, the question naturally becomes, which side will the uncommitted superdelegates choose: Hillary or Barack.  Why Hillary continues to even remain in the race is a mystery or maybe realistically she wants to sabotage any chance of Barack winning in the Fall. Regardless, the Democratic party believes within the next week, a candidate will be chosen.

Assuming Barack reaches the magic number of 2,026 delegates needed for the nomination, will Hillary step aside gracefully?  Unfortunately, it is not likely.  Some closed-door negotiations will need to occur for that to happen.  If she hasn't stopped her campaign when she has lost the majority of pledge delegates, doesn't have the popular vote and is losing in pledged superdelegates committed to date, why quit now.

Despite what many have professed to be the case, this Democratic Primary season has demonstrated quite clearly that the nomination system is broken.  The concept of delegates is out-dated and needs to be removed.  We no longer live in an agrarian society that requires representatives to make the long trip to a convention site.  Our society and technology have evolved to the point where a primary vote held on a single day can be easily accomplished with the proper planning.  The primary should be decided by the popular vote and the candidates can proceed onto the Presidential contest.

The current system easily and regularly disenfranchises voters more so than the gamesmanship that is being played with Florida and Michigan.  It's time to demand elections which truly represent the will of the people.  Ultimately even through we are being made to choose between two sets of marshmallows, it should be our choice not some group of paper hat wearing, banner waving sycophants.
